The famous growing Nandi was right in front of me. It’s said that the stone of which the Nandi is made possesses unique properties, causing it to grow 1 inch every 20 years. Legend has it that once upon a time, people could comfortably walk around the Nandi. Today, however, it is touching the temple pillars on all sides. When I looked closely, it did appear to be slightly out of shape. The Nandi rock was probably indeed expanding. It would be fascinating to investigate this further and find out what is causing the expansion of the rock.

Each ruler added something to the existing fortification, leaving an impression of their existence. The independent Republic of India, alas, has left its mark in the form of carved-out lovers’ names and failed attempts at restoration. So be it.

To my left stood the ruins of the Lakshmi-Narasimha temple. I climbed the steep stairs of the Gopuram and entered the temple premises. Though in ruins, the overall structure was quite intact: the Gopuram, the Mandapam, the Garbha-griha—everything was recognizable. A small Hanuman statue was placed at the entrance. The air was filled with a mystic silence, disrupted only by the slow wind blowing through the broken walls and pillars. It was quite an “another-world-like” moment.

अपरिचित हिमाचल – भाग ४ – कमरू नागचा खडतर ट्रेक
दोन-चार वळणे पार केली आणि कमरू नाग मंदिराचा प्रशस्त परिसर नजरेस पडला. हुश्श! पोहोचलो एकदाचा. डोंगर माथ्यावर एक सपाट प्रदेश होता. एका कोपऱ्यात मंदिर होते. तर त्याच्या समोरच एक तळे होते. तळ्याच्या बाजूने गोलाकार एक पायवाट बांधलेली होती. पलीकडच्या बाजूने आणखी एक वाट मंदिराकडे येताना दिसत होती. ही तीच वाट जी देवीधार आणि शिकारी देवीच्या मंदिराकडून येते. इथून बरेच लोक येताना दिसत होते. तळ्याच्या कडेने काही थोडीफार दुकाने आणि ढाबे होते. फारशी गर्दी नव्हती पण बऱ्यापैकी लोकांचा राबता होता. सगळा परिसर अतिशय रम्य वाटत होता. मी मंदिराच्या दिशेने निघालो. हेही मंदिर म्हणजे एक लहानसा चौथराच होता. देवाची मूर्ती म्हणजे एका चौकोनी दगडावर देवाची आकृती कोरलेली होती. चौथऱ्यावर छप्पर उभारले होते. सगळा अतिशय साधा प्रकार होता. पण तरीही फार छान वाटत होतं. मी दर्शन घेतलं आणि बाजूचे तळे निरखू लागलो. या तळ्यात लोकं पैसे, दागिने, वगैरे वस्तू टाकतात देवाला अर्पण करण्यासाठी. असं म्हणतात की या तळ्यात शेकडो करोडो रुपयांची संपत्ती आहे. मात्र त्याला कोणी हात लावत नाही. यातली संपत्ती कोणी बाहेर काढायचा प्रयत्न केला तर त्या व्यक्तीवर अतिशय वाईट परिस्थिती ओढवते म्हणे. असो.
अपरिचित हिमाचल – भाग ३ – जंझेली ते रोहांडा
चैल-चौक वरून करसोगच्या दिशेने जाणारा आणखी एक फाटा फुटतो. रोहांडाला जायला हाच रस्ता घ्यायचा होता. जसे चैल-चौक सोडले तसा रस्ता पुन्हा डोंगरावर चढू लागला. हिमाचल मधल्या डोंगररांगा एकसलग नाहीत. सतलज, बियास, तीर्थन, अशा नद्यांनी प्रचंड दऱ्या निर्माण केल्या आहेत. तसेच अधे-मधे काही पठारी प्रदेशही आहेत. जशी उंची बदलते तशी भूदृश्ये, वातावरण, झाडांचे प्रकार, पिके सारे काही बदलते. फिरता फिरता हे सारे बदल पाहणे म्हणजे एक रोचक अनुभव असतो. एव्हाना उन्हं उतरणीला लागली होती. गर्द झाडीतून झिरपणारा सोनेरी प्रकाश मोहक वाटत होता. वाटेत प्रत्येक वळणाला भूदृश्य पालटत होते. किती ठिकाणी थांबू आणि किती फोटो काढू असं झालं होतं. वाटेतल्या सृष्टिसौंदर्याचा मनसोक्त आस्वाद घेत एकदाचा रोहांडाला पोहोचलो.
अपरिचित हिमाचल – भाग २ – शिकारी देवी
शिकारी देवीचे हे मंदिर अतिशय प्राचीन मानले जाते. रोचक बाब अशी की या मंदिरावर कायमस्वरूपी छप्पर नाही. लोकांनी बऱ्याचदा मंदिरावर छप्पर बांधायचा प्रयत्न केला. पण ते कधीच टिकले नाही. आणि गंमत अशी की या जागी प्रचंड बर्फ पडत असूनही देवीच्या मूर्तीवर कधीच बर्फ साचत नाही. खरं-खोटं त्या देवीस ठाऊक. या देवीचे स्थानमाहात्म्य महाभारत काळापासूनचे. असं म्हणतात की पांडव कौरवांसोबत द्यूत खेळायला सुरुवात करणार होते तेव्हा शिकारी देवी एका सामान्य स्त्रीच्या रूपात तिथे आली आणि तिने पांडवांना द्यूत खेळू नका, याने तुम्ही सर्वस्व गमावाल असा इशारा दिला. मात्र पांडवांनी तिच्या या इशाऱ्याकडे दुर्लक्ष केलं आणि खेळ सुरू केला. या द्यूतात पांडव नुसते हरलेच नाहीत तर त्यांना वनवास आणि अज्ञातवासही भोगावा लागला. एका अर्थाने देवीचा इशारा खरा ठरला.
